We keep Charli's Chooks on pasture. That is partly just because that is the land we have. But we also like to keep them on grass at it keeps the birds healthy and the eggs tasting good too.
The birds mainly eat prepared feed — pellets that are specially constituted for laying birds. They do, however, graze the grass looking for small titbits and insects to add to their diet.
We move the henhouse around the pasture every few months or so to keep the grass healthy and clean. It is a big job — usually involving a tractor followed by several hours moving the electric fencing and the other accoutrement of hen-keeping.
Last week was moving time and the chickens are free-ranging over a new section of grass.
